Dispelling the Flower Show Hort Mystique

The Door Garden Club aims to have a collection of monthly programs each season that are of interest to all of its members, and Ray Rogers will fill out this year's agenda Tuesday, August 20th when he dispels the mystique surrounding horticulture flower show entries.

Ray is a member of the Town and County Garden Club in the Sheboygan-Kohler area and a Garden Club of America Horticulture judge. His program will cover everything from planning a Horticulture Division for a flower show and preparing and displaying a garden flower specimen for an exhibit, to what judges look for in a winning entry. For gardeners who aren't growers, Ray's presentation will be enlightening and allow for a richer experience at the next traditional flower show they attend.

Since the first public flower show was held in Philadelphia in 1829, gardeners have showcased their finest specimens to be judged by seasoned experts and admired by the public. Traditional flower shows today typically include Horticulture and Floral Design Divisions, and sometimes Photography and Botanical Arts Divisions. The Door Garden Club plans to hold small bench flower shows with Horticulture and Floral Design Divisions at many of its monthly meetings. The next one will be Tuesday, September 17, at the Horseshoe Bay Golf Club Beach Club in Egg Harbor.

The August 20th Horticulture program by Ray Rogers will begin at 1 p.m. at Write On, Door County in Juddville, after which there will be a brief business meeting. Participants may bring the most beautiful stem from their garden for all to enjoy and for Ray to critique as time permits.

Sign up for the programs is required on the Door Garden Club website at doorgardenclub.org. Everyone is welcome, although space is limited, and members and their invited guests will receive priority.
