Floral Designers to Interpret Themes for Door County Flower Show

Professional and hobbyist floral designers will have their creative talents on full display for the Door Garden Club's Flower Show at the Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor Tuesday, July 23, from 9 am to 3 pm.  Each of the ten area designers who have entered the show will interpret a different theme for the Table-for-Two exhibition.

The ten designers and catchy themes they will seek to portray or interpret in their Table-for-Two tablescape entries are:

            • Astrological:  Jackie Ehlert, Blossom Flower House, Sister Bay

            • Botanical:  Mari Goecks, Sister Bay

            • Ephemerical:  Julie Watkins, Ephraim

            • Historical:  Jamie Peotter, Roots on Ninth Floral, Green Bay

            • Lyrical:  Ginger Baron, The Ginger House, Fish Creek

            • Magical:  Casey Hurley, Hello Honey Floral, Appleton

            • Mythical:  Tracy Melger, ArtRoom Flowers, Fish Creek

            • Nordical:  Helene Ingsten-Anderson & Duska Pearson, Flora Flowershop, Sister Bay

            • Organical:  Nichole Campbell, Petal Pusher Floral, Green Bay

            • Whimsical:  Jane Mohit, Lucky Stars Flowerfarm, Ellison Bay

"Fresh flowers are to dominate the overall design" says Rose Bykowski, a Door Garden Club member who owned and operated the Petals and Stems flower shop in Green Bay for many years.  Mary Beth James, also a member of the club, explains that "The challenge to portray a theme makes creating the entry more interesting for the designer and more intriguing for the people who come to see the show."

Sonja Durkee, club president, who has been entering flower shows across the county for 25 years and once won a "Best of the Blues" at the Philadelphia Flower Show, said the entries will not be formally judged this year "But everyone who comes to the show will have an opportunity to vote for First, Second, and Third Place 'People's Choice' awards that will be presented towards the end of the show."

According to the Sister Bay Historical Society, the last known flower show held in Door County was in Ephraim in 1941.  The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported at the time that the show had numerous different horticulture and artistic floral design divisions and classes within those divisions.

A morning and an afternoon floral design demonstration by Nichole Campbell, owner of Petal Pusher Floral in Green Bay, will be part of the one-day show. The flower show is a fundraising event for the Door Garden Club's Scholarships and Green Spaces grants program.

Flower show sponsors include: Piggly Wiggly, The Ginger House, Lucky Stars Flowerfarm, Arbor Crowne Properties, Petal Pusher Floral, Rose Bykowski, Sonja Durkee, Mary Beth James, MaFolie Flowerfarm, Kathi Whiteside, Wendy Walker, and Julie Watkins.  The show is a fundraising event for the club's scholarships and grants program.

General admission tickets include either the morning or afternoon floral design demonstration and can be purchased in advance on the Door Garden Club website at doorgardenclub.org.
